Bavaria’s justice minister defends herself in the mollath case

Mollath was committed to a psychiatric hospital in 2006 – because, according to the verdict at the time, he had severely abused his wife and slashed the tires of dozens of cars. The public prosecutor’s office has meanwhile requested the reopening of his case.
Merk said that when there were "massive doubts about fundamental findings" in the court ruling against mollath in november 2012, she ordered a retrial within half an hour. Before that, it had not been legally permissible to do so.
For the first time she showed emotional involvement in the case. "In my statements and arguments on this case, it was not apparent that I was personally and humanly moved by the fate of a person who has been housed in a psychiatric ward for almost seven years now," the 57-year-old said. This is probably due to her office as minister of justice.
